If it’s food and wine you’re after, there’s plenty to fill the tummies as Bunratty Cookery School’s Donnagh Gregson is teaming up with the Weber Experience BBQ Roadshow for live BBQ demonstration from 1pm-6pm, including tasting, demonstrations and even your very own recipe cards to take home! There’s also Lunch time BBQ on the terrace with music at Bunratty Castle Hotel from 1pm-3pm, and fill your boots with cheese, olives and lots more at the Artisan Food Market with Clare Crafts from 12pm to 6pm.

Over at Bunratty Folk Park (which has discounted family and Medieval Banquet tickets) there’ll be food tastings and demonstrations of traditional baking methods including, among others, Griddle Bread, Soda Bread, Porter Cakes and Apple Tarts. And make sure you don’t leave without tasting their famous Bunratty mead!

The 19^th century folkpark is a magical recreation of times past, with thatched cottages, furnished in the manor of turn-of-the-century Ireland. One of the highlights of a trip to Bunratty is an appointment with the folk park’s resident photographer, Terry O’Brien.  In his studio guests don traditional dress and pose for black and white sepia-toned photos.  Some of these visitors include some very famous faces, which is why the photographer featured in a national newspaper this week, having entertained stars such as Alex Ferguson, Gerry Ryan, and actors Peter Ustinov , Gabriel Byrne and Ellen Barkin.  If you are planning a visit to Durty Nelly’s anytime soon, be sure to call in and get your place in the hall of fame!

Hotels.com, the booking website, recently published figures that show the average hotel room price in Ireland has fallen to just €79, compared to the €120 and even €140 rates of the past.  If you want a cheaper hotel room you’ll have to travel to the Czech Republic, at €76, Poland at €74 and Hungary at €70.

If you’ve been putting off that trip to the homeland for years, now’s the time, as Seamus MacCormaic, director of market management UK & Ireland at Hotels.com suggest the market may have ‘bottomed out’. “The Irish hotel market is slower to recover than other countries with prices falling 4% in the first half of 2010,” he said.
